Wilfried Stelzhammer founded Schoppernau ski school. The very first ski school was built on the same spot as the present one.

Over the years the ski school grew constantly, so a new building was constructed in 1980. During the 1980s the ski school team consisted of some 20-25 ski instructors.

Of course, this building also needed to be continually modernised; among the new additions were a cellar, a child supervision room and a new toilet block.
The nursery slopes also had to move with the times, and acquired technical learning equipment such as a conveyor belt and a children’s carousel. A cable lift and a play tent completed the picture, assuring a thoroughly modern, effective means of ski tuition. Today a total of three conveyor belt lifts, as well as an igloo, a carousel and a play tent are permanent fixtures in our Kinderland children’s ski area.

The ski school acquired its own snow cannon to ensure the smooth running of ski tuition, even in those rare winters with little snow!

The reins were handed to Werner Geiger, who took over as director of Au-Schoppernau Snow Sports School. In a wave of renewed enthusiasm the office was extended and thoroughly modernised through the addition of computer equipment and new sales software.
At peak times our team now numbered up to 70 instructors, and was thus one of the largest ski schools in the Bregenzerwald.

When they were awarded the Innovation Prize for their winter fun experience programme, the valiant efforts of ski school director Werner Geiger and his team proved worthwhile. This programme still forms the mainstay of our children’s tuition plan, and continues to enjoy great popularity today.

After 10 years under the leadership of Werner Geiger, the position of ski school director and office manager was taken over by Markus Kobald.
